Problem Hypothesis
Our team was interested in investigating how the mental and emotional wellbeing of educators was being impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing requirements for social distancing and remote learning environments. According to a recent blog post from The Institute of Education Sciences, teachers are dealing with a wide array of new challenges during these unprecedented times due to COVID-19 (Porter, 2020). Reconfiguring their classrooms, learning new technology, dealing with feelings of isolation due to social distancing, uncertainty about their own safety and health, and being sensitive to the needs of their students all while creating effective learning environments are all elements of the “new normal” in many schools. Our team is interested to discover how they are managing the stress and what kind of toll it may be taking on them from a mental and emotional standpoint. We interviewed teachers in Pender County Schools, located in the coastal area of Eastern North Carolina, who are implementing the Hybrid-Flexible (“HyFlex”) model, which simultaneously provides both an in-person and virtual learning experience to students.
